Ramboll has been appointed to play a key role in the pioneering green energy scheme – Barrow Green Hydrogen Project.

Barrow Green Hydrogen, part of the Green Hydrogen Energy Company (GHECO) portfolio – a joint venture between Schroders Greencoat and Carlton Power – has named Ramboll as owner’s engineer for the project in Cumbria.  

The Barrow project is one of the earliest and largest awarded under the government’s first Hydrogen Allocation Round (HAR1) to reach a final investment decision and will supply green hydrogen to Kimberly Clark’s manufacturing site.

When operational, this supply of green hydrogen is expected to reduce natural gas consumption on the site by up to 50% and reduce CO2 emissions by approximately 18,300 tonnes annually.

Ramboll has been working on the project since 2024 and moving forwards will be providing technical and programme assurance through detailed engineering, installation and commissioning.

This will include contract administration, design and interface coordination, chairing hazard and operability studies, multidisciplinary technical reviews and providing site support at key milestones.
