II LIVE ROUNDTABLE ON CLOSING THE NORTH/SOUTH DIVIDE

Andy Burnham and Steve Rotheram discuss role of infrastructure in the levelling-up agenda

Liverpool City Region mayor Steve Rotheram and Greater Manchester mayor Andy Burnham will head up a special Infrastructure Intelligence roundtable event on Friday 2 October looking at the role of infrastructure investment in levelling up the North/South divide.

The roundtable is the latest in the Infrastructure Intelligence Live series of events and our top panel also includes representatives from the North of Tyne Combined Authority, the woman bidding to be the first female mayor in the country in the Tees Valley, as well as business and think tank representatives from the north of England.

The UK is one of the most geographically unequal developed economies in the world. While cities and large towns in the south east of England are among the most productive and prosperous places in Europe, most in the north and the Midlands lag far behind.

The Government has made it a key priority to address this inequality and ‘level up’ underperforming and left-behind parts of the UK through a programme of infrastructure development, investing in education, skills and scientific R&D. Infrastructure investment will play a key role in this ‘levelling up’ and so will the elected metro majors and their combined authorities.
