CREATION OF A MAJOR ROAD NETWORK

ACE responds to proposals for the creation of a Major Road network (MRN)

ACE has responded to the Department for Transport’s proposals for the creation of a Major Road Network (MRN).

The MRN aims to reduce congestion, support the strategic road network and all road users, as well as deliver economic growth and unlock housing opportunities. The proposals suggest that dedicated funding from the National Road Funds could be used to improve the “middle tier” of our busiest and most economically significant local authority ‘A’ roads.

Led by our roads group, ACE’s response suggests that the Department’s plans hinge on a sustainable revenue base for the National Roads Fund and that there is a need to bolster local/regional financial planning capabilities, notably through the development of sub-national transport bodies to look at local/regional transport issues.
