Transport Scotland has launched a £1.94bn contract notice inviting firms to bid for a new framework to deliver the final 58-mile stretch of the A9 dualling programme.
The A9 dualling project is one of Scotland's largest transport infrastructure programmes, which aims to upgrade 83 miles of single carriageway between Perth and Inverness – being completed in a number of sections.
Transport Scotland said this latest delivery framework had been developed following consultation with the construction industry with early contractor involvement aiming to attract more competition and boost collaboration.
It said this approach was looking to “drive value for money” by appointing the contractor at the pre-construction stage, bringing expertise to optimise design, manage risks and improve constructability.
Publication of the contract notice starts the procurement process, which is expected to conclude before the end of the year. The first contract to be procured via the framework will be the Dalraddy and Slochd section.
Cabinet secretary for economy, tourism and transport, Stephen Flynn MSP, said: “Commencing the procurement of this framework agreement gives a clear signal to the industry and to Scotland, that we are serious about delivering the A9 Dualling.
“We have listened to the construction industry and have refreshed our delivery model to support this government's commitment to delivering dualling of the A9 by the end of 2035. This announcement today is evidence of our continued commitment to full dualling of the A9.”
He added: “The A9 Dualling Programme is about far more than infrastructure: it is about strengthening connections between the Highlands and the Central Belt, supporting economic growth, and local communities by creating opportunities for people and businesses across Scotland.”
The following five sections of the A9 dualling programme between Perth and Inverness and being handled via the framework:
- Pass of Birnam to Tay Crossing (8.4km) - Lot 1
- Killiecrankie to Glen Garry (22km) - Lot 2
- Glen Garry to Crubenmore (20.5km) - Lot 1
- Crubenmore to Kincraig (16.5km) - Lot 1, and
- Dalraddy to Slochd (25km) - Lot 2
