STUDIO EGRET WEST TO MASTERPLAN REMAINDER OF BATTERSEA POWER STATION DEVELOPMENT

Battersea Power Station has appointed Studio Egret West to masterplan the final phases of work at the Battersea Power Station development.

Studio Egret West has been appointed master planner, urban designer and landscape architect for the remaining 50% of the site which comprises 16-acres. The site has outline planning permission for 3.2 million sq ft of new homes, commercial, cultural and leisure space.

Studio Egret West will evolve Rafael Viñoly’s original 42-acre riverside neighbourhood masterplan, first conceived more than 15 years ago, to respond to changes in expectations around lifestyle, leisure and workspace.

With the regeneration of around half of the site now complete, these future phases will complete the ambitious mixed-use riverside neighbourhood centred around the iconic Grade II* listed landmark, which has welcomed more than 40 million visitors since opening in 2022.

The plans will aim to advance the neighbourhood’s rich mixed-use offering, while contributing to the Mayor of London’s Growth Plan.

Having laid derelict for nearly three decades, Battersea Power Station was purchased by its current Malaysian shareholders in 2012 and has since been successfully transformed with more than 2,200 homes, around 800,000 sq ft of office space, a new Zone 1 London Underground station and over 150 retail, dining and leisure experiences.

At the heart of the neighbourhood is the Grade II* listed power station, which opened to the public in 2022 following an eight-year restoration.

The final phases of Battersea Power Station will connect to the new Nine Elms Park, a 14-acre green space running from Vauxhall, through Nine Elms and concluding at the six-acre riverfront Power Station Park.

Tan Sri Shahril Ridza Ridzuan, chairman of Battersea Project Holding Company, said: “The way cities function has shifted dramatically since 2012, when we purchased and began work on the Battersea Power Station redevelopment project. Fourteen years later, now is a critical time to reflect on the original plans and fine tune them to better support how people now live, work and spend their leisure time in the city.

“I speak on behalf of the shareholders in saying that London remains one of the most captivating and innovative cities in the world, driven by growth and being supportive of inward investment. We are proud of the contribution Battersea Power Station has made to this great city.”

Sam Cotton, interim CEO of Battersea Power Station Development Company, said: “Having achieved so much already in delivering this project, it is hard to believe that we are only halfway through. With the appointment of Studio Egret West, we are pressing the start button on the delivery programme for the final phases of Battersea Power Station, having tasked them to ensure that what’s still to come at this development reflects the vision and ambition of our shareholders for the riverside neighbourhood, while reflecting the changes in technology and society since it was conceived. Today’s appointment marks an exciting exploratory step forward in visioning how Battersea Power Station will look in 10 to 15 years time.”

David West, founding director at Studio Egret West, said: “Battersea Power Station is one of London’s most extraordinary regeneration stories, and Studio Egret West is delighted to play a part in shaping its next chapter. Our work on the remaining c.50% of the neighbourhood will build upon the site’s remarkable legacy and seek to extend its cultural, commercial and community significance at both local and London levels. We feel Battersea Power Station’s candescence and hope to further spread and sustain its glow.”
