Network Rail is investing £13m to modernise overhead power lines at Birmingham New Street, replacing infrastructure that dates back to the 1960s.

The work will, however, require the station to close to rail services over Christmas, with no trains running to or from Birmingham New Street between 24 and 28 December.

Engineers will renew some of the most complex sections of overhead wiring as part of the first phase of a three-year upgrade programme. Further work is scheduled to take place during the Christmas periods of 2027 and 2028.

Martin Colmey, route director for Network Rail Central route, said: “Birmingham New Street is at the heart of the rail network, supporting millions of local, regional and national journeys every year. Much of the overhead line equipment dates back to the 1960s and needs to be replaced. This £13m investment has been carefully planned to make the railway more reliable.”
