Harnessing the power of their trans-disciplinary team, AECOM turned a Grade 2* listed building into modern residential property.

The headquarters of a vacuum cleaner company might not be obvious candidate for Grade 2* listing. However, after the high-profile demolition of the Firestone factory, attention turned to protecting the nearby Hoover offices from the same fate.

Left vacant for over a decade, the offices were in danger of becoming yet another disused brownfield site – so AECOM were tasked with turning them into high-spec suburban apartments fit for the 21st century.

Working with listed property comes with major challenges. However, pulling together a diverse team of construction professionals, AECOM were able to innovate novel approaches to property conversion.

For example, to install new levels between the existing floor slabs, AECOM designed a timber frame which could support the additional load whilst being hidden within period-style walls. The end result was a characterful, modern and high-quality residential property which retained the building’s original and distinctive art deco stylings.
