Name: Rob Stokes Job: Associate Project Manager at Burroughs
What does your job involve? As an Associate Project Manager in a civil engineering infrastructure and building consultancy, my role involves overseeing the planning, coordination, and execution of projects to ensure they meet deadlines, budgets and client objectives. I act as the key link between the engineers, contractors and clients. I help manage resources, monitor progress and resolve challenges and project risks efficiently. I track project milestones, facilitate team communication and ensure compliance with regulatory standards. My focus is on keeping projects running smoothly from inception through construction to completion, ensuring quality, safety, and cost-effectiveness.
What do you enjoy most about your job? Knowing that the work I do directly contributes to improving infrastructure across the UK and making a positive impact on communities. I thrive on problem-solving, coordinating teams and overcoming challenges to ensure smooth project delivery. Collaborating with multiple stakeholders allows me to be part of something meaningful, where every milestone brings a sense of accomplishment. Being able to enhance the built environment and contribute to lasting change makes my work fulfilling.
How did you get into this career? I studied A Levels and then went to university to study Civil and Coastal Engineering at Plymouth University. From there, I secured a couple of industrial placements with two contractors and then joined Sir Robert McAlpine as a graduate. After working on 3 significant building projects, I left contracting and joined the consulting industry with Burroughs.
Have you got any advice for others looking to pursue a similar career? For me, gaining hands-on experience early on in your career is really valuable, whether that be through industrial placements or an apprenticeship it does not matter - there is no one size fits all route. I also believe getting exposure on site will help fast track personal development and understanding of the built environment and the issues faced. Staying curious, continuously learning and embracing opportunities (like joining the ACE EP community) to develop leadership will help build a successful and rewarding career.
