I was always fascinated by beautiful structures such as the Parthenon, the Eiffel Tower etc. And I found myself curious to learn how they can stand for so many years. Hence, I decided to become a Civil Engineer and find out.
My area of expertise sits with the Transport and Infrastructure industry, and I have found the experience very rewarding so far. However, there have definitely been challenges. I believe the biggest one is not to get disheartened when things don't go according to plan. Career paths are not linear, they can also be stagnant, and squiggly. It's essential to remain optimistic and flexible according to the opportunities that are presented to you. So, overall, I would say: don't lose hope! Some things just take time.
I started at the beginning of the pandemic, so the industry changed significantly since then. I think the pandemic shaped the way we formed in a way that no one could foresee. Now a hybrid working model is adopted by most companies. I think it demonstrated that we can be flexible on our working approach to adapt to the conditions around us. Although challenging at the beginning, I managed to adjust and adopt working from home and then embrace ethe hybrid model as well. A flexible approach to working that takes the best of both worlds.
I had the opportunity on assisting with design on Active Travel schemes in Ireland, which I found very rewarding. The schemes were aiming on improving safety around schools around Dublin in cooperation with the local councils. The fact that I was able to make a difference and contribute to the improvement of the local communities was definitely very rewarding and one of the great advantages of being a civil engineer.
