What does your job involve?  My job as a Mechanical Building Services Consultant involves designing and overseeing the mechanical systems that make buildings functional, comfortable, and efficient. 

What do you enjoy most about your job?  What I enjoy most about my job is seeing projects transform from initial concepts into fully functioning buildings that serve people well. There's something deeply satisfying about walking through a completed building and knowing that the systems I designed are quietly working behind the scenes, creating comfortable, efficient spaces.

How did you get into this career?  I got into this career through a friend who referred me to an entry-level position at a building services firm. That opportunity was invaluable in bridging the gap between my academic studies in building services and gaining practical, hands-on experience with mechanical designs and systems. It opened the door to a profession focused on delivering innovative, cost-effective, and sustainable solutions tailored to each building’s unique requirements. Since then, my enthusiasm for building services engineering has only grown as I’ve witnessed firsthand how essential these systems are in creating buildings that are not only visually stunning but also functional, comfortable, and sustainable. 

Have you got any advice for others looking to pursue a similar career?  Anyone looking to pursue a similar career—whether or not they have a university degree—should focus on gaining practical experience. Seek opportunities such as internships, placements, or apprenticeships to get hands-on exposure to real projects. While a degree in mechanical or building services engineering can be beneficial, it’s certainly not the only path. Don’t underestimate the power of networking—building connections with friends, mentors, and industry
professionals can open doors you might not expect. Also, stay curious and committed to continuous learning by keeping up to date with the latest technologies and sustainability practices. This field is constantly evolving, so a willingness to learn and adapt is key.
