Esh Construction has completed the A1290 Dualling Works in Sunderland, delivering a major upgrade to one of the region’s most important transport corridors.
Delivered in partnership with the IAMP LLP, a limited liability partnership established by South Tyneside Council and Sunderland City Council, the project included widening the existing single carriageway, upgrading junctions, and introducing improved pedestrian and cycle facilities across the 370-acre site.
The works formed part of a wider programme of infrastructure improvements designed to unlock development at the International Advanced Manufacturing Park (IAMP), a nationally significant employment site that is home to advanced manufacturing and automotive industries, including Nissan and its supply chain.

Steven Garrigan, divisional director at Esh Construction, said: “Delivering the A1290 Dualling Works has been a vital part of improving the region’s strategic road network and supporting future growth at the International Advanced Manufacturing Park.
“This project continues to demonstrate our capability to deliver complex civil engineering schemes that enhance connectivity and unlock development opportunities. Working collaboratively with Sunderland City Council and South Tyneside Council, we’ve provided a high-quality infrastructure upgrade that will serve businesses, commuters, and communities for years to come.”
By transforming 1,550 metres of the A1290 into a dual carriageway – the majority of which was actioned off-line – the scheme will reduce congestion, improve journey times, and provide safer, more sustainable travel options for businesses, commuters, and local communities. Accompanying drainage works, including the construction of supporting swales and attenuation ponds, as well as street lighting, traffic signals, pedestrian crossings and landscaping works were also undertaken.
Environmental considerations were central to the design, with landscaping and drainage improvements incorporated to manage surface water and protect local habitats. Throughout the delivery phase, Esh worked closely with stakeholders to minimise disruption and maintain access for residents and businesses.
The completion of the project is a critical milestone in unlocking further development opportunities within IAMP and the surrounding area. It represents a significant step forward in improving connectivity and supporting economic growth across Sunderland and South Tyneside and is anticipated to create more than 7,000 job over the next 10 years.
Kevin Johnston, portfolio holder for housing, regeneration and business at Sunderland City Council, said: “The completion of the A1290 Dualling Works marks yet another major milestone in the development of the International Advanced Manufacturing Park (IAMP).
“Since the first building opened its doors in 2019, we’ve seen global firms such as Falco, SNOP, Jatco and AESC all make IAMP their home and the completion of these works will pave the way for further development as we seek to establish it as one of the UK’s most advanced manufacturing hubs.”
Beyond construction, Esh Construction has delivered social value through community engagement initiatives. Esh reinvested £6.1m within the local supply chain spanning within 30 miles of Sunderland, maximising economic impact in the region and demonstrating a strong commitment to creating lasting benefits for the community.
The project has provided 240 training weeks for apprentice, and 10 weeks of work experience to give young people a helpful insight into the construction industry.
