A £250m investment in rail infrastructure at Cambridge South station is reaping rewards with more than 110,000 passengers passing through its gate in its first month.

The new rail hub opened at the end of June 2026 to help improve the way people travel to and from Cambridge Biomedical Campus - Europe’s largest biomedical campus.

The new station is now cutting journey times, boosting rail links and supporting further employment growth in the region, thanks to the arrival of new train services by Greater Anglia, Great Northern, Thameslink and CrossCountry.

Jamie Burles, managing director for GBR Anglia said: “Having seen over 110,000 journeys in the first month alone demonstrates that the demand was there, waiting for us to build this new facility, and open a new gateway to this very important biomedical campus.

“It really does go to show how investment in the railway can transform people’s lives for the better, by building connectivity and providing easier ways to get to where people most need to be.”
