£1.4BN FLOOD DEFENCE PROGRAMME TO PROTECT UK INFRASTRUCTURE

The UK government has announced a major new programme of investment in flood defences aimed at protecting homes, businesses and critical infrastructure across England.

The funding will support hundreds of projects, including new schemes and the repair and maintenance of existing assets, as part of efforts to improve resilience to flooding and climate change.

Environment Secretary Steve Barclay said the investment would “protect homes and businesses” while strengthening the country’s resilience to extreme weather. He added that the programme would help ensure communities are better prepared for future flood risks.

The announcement highlights a mix of traditional engineering solutions, including flood barriers and embankments, alongside nature-based approaches to managing water and reducing risk over the long term.

Funding will also be used to repair infrastructure damaged by recent storms, with the government aiming to ensure flood assets continue to provide effective protection.

A government statement said the programme would “support economic growth” by safeguarding property and infrastructure, while also creating opportunities across the engineering and construction sectors.

The investment forms part of wider efforts to strengthen national resilience, with ministers emphasising the role of flood defence infrastructure in protecting communities and supporting long-term economic stability.
