A £1.3bn data centre in Essex has gained planning approval from Basildon Council’s Planning Committee.

Caineal plans to develop the facility on a strategic site near the A127 and Old Nevendon Road in Wickford.

The development is expected to generate substantial economic benefits. Alongside creating more than 600 construction-related jobs and 120 skilled operational roles, the project is projected to stimulate significant local employment through supply chains and service providers - potentially supporting five indirect jobs for every direct position created.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for our borough,” said Jessica Power, cabinet member for jobs and skills.

“It places Basildon at the heart of the UK's AI revolution and will act as a magnet for high-value, technology-led businesses, driving skills development and creating long-term employment opportunities.”

The council has underlined the strategic importance of investing in digital infrastructure and AI innovation across South Essex to ensure the region capitalises on its economic potential rather than losing out to other parts of the UK or overseas.

Construction is expected to commence once final planning formalities are completed, with further updates to follow regarding project timelines and community engagement initiatives.

In addition to the data centre, the development includes the creation of a new Local Nature Reserve to the east of the site, contributing to the area's environmental and recreational value.
