In the Spotlight interview features Sir John, who is undoubtedly one of the most important and high-profile people in the UK construction sector. His career spans a number of high-profile roles including chairman of John Laing, chief executive roles at Union Railways, Costain, Railtrack and Network Rail and chairman of the Olympic Delivery Authority, the body which successfully built the venues, facilities and infrastructure for the 2012 Olympic Games. 

Sir John has always been an influential figure in the construction sector. In September 2013 the Armitt Review, his independent review of long term infrastructure planning in the UK, was published and is still referred to today as being ahead of its time in its analysis and conclusions for the industry.

As well as leading the delivery of the London 2012 Olympic construction projects, Sir John chaired the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council from 2007 to 2012, was chief executive of Network Rail from 2002 to 2007, Railtrack CEO from 2001 to 2002 and CEO at Costain from 1997 to 2001. He was also chief executive of Union Railways, the company responsible for development of the high speed Channel Tunnel Rail Link from 1993 to 1997. He received a CBE in 1996 for his contribution to the rail industry and a knighthood in 2012 for services to engineering and construction.

The interview will see Sir John in conversation with Infrastructure Intelligence editor Andy Walker, who will be discussing his career to date, his thoughts on the infrastructure sector, the role of the National Infrastructure Commission, the politics of construction, the effects of the Covid crisis on the industry and much more.
