Hong Kong International Airport is one of the world’s busiest airports, with over 1,000 daily flights to 100 destinations.

The addition of a major midfield concourse was intended to allow the airport to both manage and increase this capacity, accommodating the rise of international travel, boosting passenger numbers by 10m a year.

At the core of the project’s success was BIM technology, which allowed the multi-disciplinary team to model the entire build in 3D before construction began. This enabled detailed communication across departments, firms and even time zones.

In turn, this allowed for the inclusion of various cross-cutting sustainable design features, such as high-performance glazing, which reflects over 40% of solar heat, and north-facing skylights.

Together, these features simultaneously reduced the need for both artificial lighting and air-conditioning, such that the project received a BEAM Plus Final Gold Rating from the Hong Kong Green Building Council.

Please note that fellow ACE members Arup and Atkins also worked on other aspects of the airport design.
