Architects and Architectural Technologists

Overview 

Architects create the designs for new buildings and modifications to existing buildings, and can also advise on the restoration and conservation of historic structures. Architectural Technologists analyse those designs and apply their specialist knowledge of construction to identify the best materials and processes to use to transform the plans into viable construction projects.  

How do I get into this role? 

Architects typically require specialist degrees followed by professional accreditation. An Architectural Technologist requires similar technical and design skills but may not have completed a specialist degree, however this is generally required to achieve Chartered Architectural Technologist status. 

Salary expectations: £30k to £60K

Artificial Intelligence Architects

Overview 

Architects will increasingly have the opportunity to specialise in the use of Artificial Intelligence and other technologies such as Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality when preparing and testing their designs.  

Skills needed 

AI Architects will participate in cloud-based collaboration to envision 3D designs in real-time and require strong collaboration skills and creative thinking in addition to  professional qualifications. 

Salary expectations: £40k to £70k

Building Control Surveyors

Overview 

Building Control Surveyors work on both new build and building modification projects to make sure that both the design and construction comply with relevant legislation such as building regulations, fire safety measures and energy efficiency as well as safety issues such as structural stability.  

How do I get into this role? 

Building Control Surveyors often require an RICS accredited degree, which may be gained by sponsored study while working or through an apprenticeship degree programmes.  

Salary expectations: £32k to £47k

Building Information Modelling (BIM) Managers

Overview 

Building Information Modelling (BIM) concerns the sector’s use of digital technologies to produce detailed 3D models. BIM Managers will play a key role in the shift to a more digitally focused construction industry, liaising with architects, engineers, clients and onsite teams, managing workflows and directing the use of 3D models to enhance the project 

How do I get into this role? 

BIM Managers generally hold a degree in architecture, civil engineering, construction management or a similar field, and may go on to obtain a master’s degree in architecture or engineering as well as certifications such as Certified BIM Manager (CBIM) or Building Information Modelling Professional (BIMP). 

Salary expectations: £47k to £66k

Building Services Engineers

Overview 

The job of a Building Services Engineer involves designing, installing and maintaining critical building services such as acoustics, heating, lighting and power. 

How do I get into this role? 

Building Services Engineers typically hold an undergraduate or postgraduate degree in engineering and may be members of the Chartered Institute of Building Service Engineers.

Salary expectations: £29k to £42k

Building Surveyors and Historic Building Preservation Surveyors

Overview 

Building Surveyors inspect new and existing structures to provide professional advice, identify defects and advise on repair, maintenance and restoration as well as proactive measure to improve conservation and sustainability. Some Building Surveyors also offer project management and design services and others may specialise as Historic Building Preservation Surveyors.  

How do I get into this role? 

Building Surveyors often require an RICS accredited degree and will often undertake further study to attain Chartered status. Those specialising in the preservation of historic buildings may undertake specialist and postgraduate studies.  

Salary expectations: £25k to £70k
