Business in Community’s Mental Health at Work Report 2017

Business in the Community’s Mental Health at Work Report 2017 surveyed 3,000 workers across the UK and found 60% had experienced mental health issues in the last year because of work.

This report follows hot on the heels of the results of a survey this Summer from mental health charity, Mind, which suggested that men are twice as likely to suffer with mental health problems due to work when compared to women.

According to the Mind survey of 15,000 employees across 30 organisations, 32% of men attributed poor mental health to work-related stress, while only 19% of women said that work led to mental health issues, citing other factors as being equally significant. Men fared significantly worse in the amount of support they felt they received from their line managers, with only 49% saying that they received adequate support, in contrast to the 58% of women who felt supported at work. 

Significantly, the new Business in the Community report showed that 75% of employers accepted that there were major hurdles in the workplace that stopped them from effectively addressing mental health. Only 24% of managers had received any training in mental health issues and 27% claimed that performance targets in their business meant they did not have enough time to monitor workers potentially at risk of mental health problems.
