Work to start on new Kingskerswell Bypass

Secretary of state for transport Justine Greening has announced that work is to begin on the £109.2 million Kingskerswell Bypass in Devon.

The scheme incorporates three miles of dual carriageway linking Newton Abbott and Torbay, as well as a flyover section at Penn Inn.

It is hoped that the new roadway will help to cut the daily flow of traffic through the village by more than 90 per cent and much improve the air quality for local residents.

“The people of Kingskerswell will no longer have to put up with endless traffic jams, exhaust fumes and trucks thundering through the village," Ms Greening said.

"The road will really open up Torbay for tourism," she added.

Preliminary work will start later in May, with construction beginning in the autumn, ahead of completion in December 2015.

This project is one of 20 schemes that was given initial approval in chancellor George Osborne's Autumn Statement last year.
