Work set to commence on A14

The Department for Transport (DfT) says that work to improve the A14, which links the port of Felixstowe on the east coast to the M1 and M6 near Rugby, will commence immediately.

The £20 million programme will focus on the stretch between Ellington and Fen Ditton, with modifications to junctions being made to reduce congestion and cut delays caused by accidents over a two year period.

It has also announced the launch of the A14 Challenge, a consultation programme that will take account of the views of the local community.

The DfT says that the project is "a challenge to come up with ideas that are deliverable and can be worked and shaped into comparable options, and so to the best solution overall".

The A14 is one of the worst roads in the UK for congestion. The Highways Agency says that many sections of the road are operating close to capacity and a quarter of the traffic is heavy goods vehicles – double the national average.
