Work on Tees Valley biomass plant set to begin in 2012

The firm behind a Tees Valley biomass plant project is confident that work will start in 2012, according to a report.

The Northern Echo says that the scheme, which is currently on hold pending the government's Renewables Obligation review, has been given a boost by the announcement from the Committee on Climate Change’s that the UK should be generating ten per cent of its energy from biomass sources by 2050.

MGT Power, the company behind the £500 million project that is set to create 900 jobs, is expecting a positive outcome.

A spokesman from MGT Power told the Echo: "Things are moving along. The guys have been working behind the scenes to keep things moving. They are confident and ramping up their efforts to get the project built."

The government is targeting an emissions reduction of 80 per cent on 1990 levels by the year 2050 and the Echo says that MGT’s plant would save 1.2 million tonnes of carbon dioxide each year.
