  Wind-to-heat project planned for Shetlands

Plans are in place to create the UK's biggest wind-to-heat project on the Shetland Isles.

Shetland Heat Energy and Power (Sheap) has joined forces with energy firm SSE for the £3.6 million project, which hinges on winning planning permission to erect three 2.3MW turbines on Luggie's Knowe.

Currently, 1,000 homes and 100 non-domestic properties are benefitting from Sheap's existing District Heating project, which utilises a waste-to-energy plant.

If the wind arm of the project is given the go-ahead, a further 300 homes and 30 non-domestic properties will receive hot water generated by the turbines.

Sheap chairman and councillor-trustee Gary Robinson said: "This is a very exciting project for Lerwick and Shetland, and we believe for the UK as a whole."

Shetland Charitable Trust financial controller Jeff Goddard said: "We can improve the lives of local residents, help the environment and make a satisfactory return on our investment at the same time."

Scotland is regarded as one of the best places to erect wind turbines and the government wants the country to generate 100 per cent of its energy from renewable sources by 2020.
