Wind farm developers have welcomed the findings of a study conducted into the effect onshore sites have on bird populations.
The 'Greater impacts of wind farms on bird populations during construction than subsequent operation' report funded by Scottish Natural Heritage and published in the Journal of Applied Ecology investigated the extent to which wind farms can cause general bird population declines.
Following an investigation, the authors concluded that "wind farm operation has little effect on local populations".
Rob Norris from RenewableUK, the trade and professional body for the UK wind and marine renewables industries, said he was pleased with the results.
"This report should dispel the longstanding myth about wind turbines damaging birds and as such it's very welcome," he said.
His view was echoed by Niall Stuart, chief executive of Scottish Renewables.
"Onshore wind farm developers in Scotland have to complete rigorous environmental impact assessments … which are then taken into consideration by the local planning authority," he added.
