VolkerFitzpatrick secures Reading train depot contract

Construction firm VolkerFitzpatrick has secured a contract to build a new train depot at Reading station after launching a discounted bid for the project.

Network Rail had originally budgeted £76 million for the Reading Train Care Depot Implementation Works scheme but awarded the contract to VolkerFitzpatrick after it bid just £36.2 million. The contractor beat off competition from rivals Vinci and Laing O'Rourke to the project.

The new depot is part of the redevelopment of Reading train station in a bid to increase capacity on the Western route.

Costain and Hochtief have been awarded the £80 million station regeneration contract and will also build a new east chord through the current depot to allow for grade separation of the main lines. In order for this work to be completed, the current train care depot will need to be relocated to the west of Reading station.

Construction of the train depot facilities is set to begin on 1st January 2012 and is forecast to be completed by August 2013.
