UK wind power output has reached 6GW after upgrades were made to the Ormonde offshore wind farm in Cumbria, raising its own capacity to 120MW.
RenewableUK says that the development at the 24-turbine farm off Barrow-in-Furness means that the UK now has enough wind-generated power to supply over 3.3 million homes.
However, with the government's Renewable Energy Roadmap calling for 31GW of onshore and offshore wind capacity combined by 2020, the industry is not resting on its laurels.
RenewableUK says there is currently a further 19.5GW of capacity under construction, consented or in planning.
Speaking about the news, chief secretary to the treasury Danny Alexander said: "We are eager to ensure that the UK becomes the natural home for the most innovative, ambitious and inspiring renewable energy companies in the world."
The Scottish government in particular has ambitious plans for the sector as it is hoping to generate 100 per cent of its electricity from renewable sources by 2020.
