UK slips down sustainable energy rankings

The World Energy Council has ranked the UK twelfth in the world for energy sustainability, down from eighth in the world last year.

The report suggests that while the UK continues to employ some good policies, many new measures coming through have yet to be established and the detail of how they will impact on sustainability remains uncertain.

Despite the slip in rank, there were some positives that the report highlighted about developments in the UK.

The report offered up the example of Source London as a good programme underway. Source London is the UK's first city-wide network of electric vehicle charging points operated through a membership scheme.

There was also recognition of the positive impact of the UK's mandatory obligations for gas and electricity suppliers to invest in energy efficiency. This led to long-term energy benefits for low-income households, as well as for the UK's wider energy efficiency.

The report is the third annual assessment of global energy sustainability by country. Switzerland remains top of the table, while Mongolia was ranked lowest of the 92 participating nations.
