UK's tallest sculpture completed at Olympic Park

The UK's tallest sculpture has been built at the Olympic Park.

Standing at 376ft tall, the twisting red ArcelorMittal Orbit tower was completed on October 28th as the final steel ring was lifted into place by three cranes.

The £22.7 million structure, which was designed by artist Anish Kapoor and structural designer Cecil Balmond, features the five Olympic rings and is expected to attract around one million visitors a year to the Stratford site.

It will have two observation floors, a 455-step spiral staircase, a lift and a restaurant.

Mayor of London Boris Johnson said: "What better calling card for London 2012 than a piece of truly spectacular modern British art to drive visitors to east London in perpetuity.

"As the final giant steel loop is swung into place, lifting the ArcelorMittal Orbit to its full height, we are truly witnessing the most significant iconic addition to London’s skyline for decades."

Steel giant ArcelorMittal invested £19.2 million in the project, with the remaining funds provided by the London Development Agency.
