UK developers will soon be able to bid for £50 billion worth of public contracts online under new government proposals.
Cabinet secretary Francis Maude is set to unveil plans today (21st November) which aim to make it easier for British companies to secure government contracts.
Part of the plans will result in the government placing public works and services tenders online, with the Construction Enquirer reporting that building and infrastructure projects will be advertised on the web in April 2012.
Mr Maude told the BBC's Andrew Marr programme that the government is hoping to make it cheaper and "40 per cent faster" for British firms to do business with Whitehall.
He said: "While other countries manage to settle down and develop long-term relationships with business, this country appears to have taken a rather less successful, overly formal, and legalistic approach, failing to think beyond the immediate contract and failing to adequately support our businesses."
The government will plan to break up some major contracts in order for smaller enterprises to bid for the work.
