UK construction industry remains flat in Q3

Construction levels in the UK remained stagnant during the third quarter, according to new research.

The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) Construction Market Survey has revealed that one per cent more of questioned chartered surveyors reported workloads fell rather than rose during the three month period to September 2011.

Eight in ten surveyors cited economic uncertainty and lack of confidence as the biggest factors in hindering the growth of the sector, while two thirds of respondents claimed cutbacks in government spending also restricted their ability to expand.

Simon Rubinsohn, RICS' chief economist, claimed that the government's plans to build 450,000 homes by 2015 could boost the sector.

He said: "The government's housing announcement should gradually provide some much needed help and we are particularly attracted to the provision of funds for small and medium-sized developers."

Workloads rose in the private commercial sector in the third quarter, with a positive net balance of seven per cent of surveyors reporting an increase.
