Tower block demolished for station redevelopment

A 22-storey tower block in Birmingham has been felled to make way for a new shopping centre as part of the New Street Station redevelopment.

The removal of Stephenson Tower from the skyline has paved the way for the construction of a John Lewis superstore; work on which commences this spring.

Network Rail is managing the project to breathe new life into New Street Station and the Pallasades shopping centre.

A concourse that is three and a half times bigger than the existing station is being constructed, along with the installation of 30 new escalators and 15 new public lifts and a new station façade, which Network Rail says will deliver "cutting-edge architecture".

Chris Montgomery, Network Rail's project director, said: "The redevelopment of New Street will deliver a fantastic new station for passengers with more space, better access and better facilities.

"Our plans … will create jobs and help regeneration in Birmingham city centre."
