Tender out on 5,000-seater sports arena

Derby County Council is looking for a contractor to build the new multi-sport Arena on Pride Park in Derby.

According to Construction Enquirer, the project is worth £20-30 million and the 14,500-square-metre structure is to be built next to the existing Pride Park football stadium, home of Derby County, and will include a velodrome and fitness facilities.

Work will also include the construction of a surface level car park incorporating 1,150 car parking spaces.

It is hoped that the building will stage cultural events, exhibitions and conferences and will form part of Derby's "Olympic legacy", according to Claire Davenport, the council's director of leisure and culture.

Derby County Council says the building will be "futuristic" and Mace, which created the design and will work with the contractor, agrees.

Project director David Grose said: "The sculptured form will be very striking, exhibiting fluidity and movement to reflect the activities taking place inside."
