Telford & Wrekin Council has announced plans to invest £200 million in a school building programme following the axe of the Building Schools for the Future scheme.
In July 2010, education secretary Michael Gove shelved the national school rebuilding programme for England as the coalition deemed it wasteful and bureaucratic.
The council now intends to fund its own local scheme which could result in the creation of a new primary and secondary school in Stirchley, incorporating the existing Grange Park Primary and Lord Silkin Schools.
Other plans include the creation of a new Co-operative Academy for 11-16 year-olds; a 1,200-place school to replace the current Charlton School in Wellington.
Councillor Paul Watling, cabinet member for Children, Young People and Families, claimed that the new proposals will achieve better value for money than the Building Schools for the Future programme.
He said: "After reviewing previous proposals for delivering new educational facilities, I think these changes will make a huge difference to the standard of the facilities that we would now be able to provide."
A full consultation on the proposals will be launched on November 21st.
