  Southampton 'super yacht' hotel approved

Planning permission has been granted for a £50 million waterfront development in Southampton, including a super yacht-inspired hotel.

The "visually stunning" hotel will feature a Michelin-starred restaurant and a rooftop champagne bar, while the remainder of the Ocean Village plans consist of three apartment buildings providing 82 flats, plus a mix of restaurants, shops and offices.

Tenders for the construction work are due within the coming weeks, with MDL Marinas Group, which is managing the project, hoping that work will commence shortly after.

Dawn Baxendale, director of economic development at Southampton City Council, said the scheme is "excellent news".

"[It] will bring hundreds of new jobs and demonstrates that serious investors believe Southampton represents their future and is a city that is becoming comparable with the best in Europe," she said.

Ocean Village is currently home to two cinemas, plus cafes, wine bars and restaurants and a multi-storey car park with space for 776 vehicles.
