South West Marine Energy Park development announced

Yesterday (January 23rd), the government announced the south-west is to become the UK's first Marine Energy Park.

The park will stretch from Bristol through to Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly and will result in a collaborative partnership in the region between national and local government, Local Enterprise Partnerships, the Universities of Plymouth and Exeter and industry, including Cornwall's Wave Hub.

The aim of the partnership is to oversee the progress of marine power development in the Marine Energy Park.

It is estimated that tidal and wave energy has the potential to generate 27GW of power in the UK by 2050, helping the government to meet its targets of a reduction in emissions of 80 per cent on 1990 levels by this time.

Climate change minister Greg Barker said: "The south-west can build on its existing unique mix of renewable energy resource and home-grown academic, technical and industrial expertise."
