SkillBuild entrants to battle it out

This week, 113 students from 20 colleges will be battling out in the East Midlands regional heats of SkillBuild 2012.

SkillBuild, which is run by CITB-Construction Skills, is Britain's biggest skills competition and covers ten crafts, including bricklaying, carpentry and stonemasonry.

The competition sees entrants completing test pieces that challenge their ability to follow detailed instructions, produce accurate and neat work, be economical with materials and work within strict time frames.

West Nottinghamshire College is hosting the regional event on Tuesday (April 24th) at its Construction and Logistics Skills Academy.

Head of construction and building services Julian Walden told the Mansfield and Ashfield Chad that the quality of competition would be high.

"There are sure to be some incredibly high standards demonstrated in a wide-range of crafts and each category will certainly put students' accuracy and time management skills to the test," he said.

Last year's overall winner was David Bean of Cavendish Masonry and City of Bath College.
