Sittingbourne town centre is set to be regenerated after Swale Borough Council approved plans to improve the Forum shopping centre.
Spenhill, the development arm of Tesco, has secured permission to build new shops and restaurants at the site just north of Sittingbourne town centre.
A new Tesco Extra store and an additional 11 retail units will be constructed on the site of the former Sittingbourne Industrial Park, while Spenhill will also build a bridge for cyclists and pedestrians to link the town centre with the retail area to the north of the railway.
Jonathan Simpson, Tesco corporate affairs manager, claimed that the redevelopment will provide residents with the town centre that they requested.
He said: "Our successful track record of completing bespoke mixed-use, complex town centre schemes means we are confident that we can reverse the trend for over 70 per cent of local shopping trips to be made outside of Sittingbourne and bring consumers back to spend money in the town."
