Scunthorpe retail park given green light

Plans for a £20 million out-of-town retail park in Scunthorpe have been approved by the local council.

The 40,000 sq ft complex will include four retail units, with Marks and Spencer already signed up as the main anchor tenant. The development will also include 550 car parking spaces, as well as local road improvements.

Property and building group Simons are behind the project, which is expected to create up to 300 jobs in the area.

Chris Newsome, development director for Simons, claimed that the retail park is "fantastic news" for Scunthorpe.

"We've seen a huge amount of support for the plans over the last few months, so we know the councillors' decision will be welcomed by the vast majority of people in the town."

Earlier this year, Marks and Spencer closed its store in Scunthorpe town centre after years of falling sales.

Construction work will begin early next year.
