The expansion of wind energy projects is continuing apace in Scotland, with the government announcing last month that the country is on track to meet a target of 100 per cent of energy coming from renewable sources by 2020.
Last week, Scottish energy minister Fergus Ewing announced two new projects – the 177 MW Dorenell wind farm in Moray and the 125 MW Muaitheabhal wind farm in Lewis – have been approved.
Yesterday (January 3rd), energy firm SSE announced that its capacity across Scotland, Ireland and Northern Ireland has topped 1GW for the first time and that yet more sites are in development.
Ian Marchant, SSE's chief executive, said: "With construction work continuing at sites in Scotland, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, we expect that our operating onshore wind farm capacity will continue to grow significantly in the coming months."
Wind energy is a rapidly growing sector, with figures from the Department of Energy and Climate Change showing that UK onshore wind energy generation went up 111 per cent between 2010 and 2011.
