Scottish govt to unveil £60bn infrastructure programme to boost economy

The Scottish government is set to unveil a £60 billion infrastructure programme this week in a bid to boost the country's economy.

Infrastructure secretary Alex Neil will outline a series of 50 specific construction projects and 30 infrastructure programmes across Scotland.

Among the projects set to be included in the programme are the construction of a new £3 billion A96 dual carriageway, new schools and housing projects.

Mr Neil revealed that the scheme will provide a significant boost to local employment.

He said: "They are all significant developments that will both boost growth, and deliver a lasting legacy that benefits generations to come.

"It will also provide crucial support for employment, with every additional £100 million of capital we invest per year estimated to generate £160 million of economic activity and support 1,400 jobs in the wider economy for that year."

The programme will help to plug the funding gap left by Westminster's decision to reduce the amount it gives to the Scottish government by 11 per cent over the next three years.
