Sainsbury's given nod for depot plan

Sainsbury's has been given permission to build a new distribution centre in Basingstoke – securing the future of 700 jobs.

To facilitate the £100 million project, Sainsbury's has purchased a 10,400 square metre building on the Houndmills industrial estate in the town from ProLogis European Properties.

It is also in negotiation with Linde Material Handling to purchase ten acres of neighbouring land.

Once this land has been secured, the existing building will be knocked down and a new one built in its place.

Construction Enquirer says that the new distribution complex will include 550,000 square feet of chilled and ambient storage as well as 22,500 square feet of office space.

Councillor Paul Harvey says the development will be an economic boost for the town.

"It is really pleasing, especially against a backdrop of rising unemployment in the town," he said.

"Hopefully, other businesses will take note of the investment Sainsbury's is making, and secure their future in the town."
