After a study revealed that concern regarding safety is the number one deterrent for young people in pursuing a career in construction, a leading industry body has said that there is "work still to do" to improve perceptions of the sector.
CITB-ConstructionSkills surveyed a selection of 14 to 18-year-olds and 38 per cent said that on-site dangers would be the worst thing about working in the industry, the Construction Index reports.
However, designing buildings or becoming a construction manager in an office scored well and even rated better than working in sports.
In response, CITB-ConstructionSkills has joined forces with the UK Contractors Group, the Industry Training Board and Sector Skills Council, the Chartered Institute of Building and the Considerate Constructors Scheme to open up more than 100 sites to the public in an event called Open Doors Weekend taking place on November 9th and 10th 2012.
"While working on site might not appeal to everyone it’s important that the reasoning behind this is a personal preference rather that an industry reputational issue," explained careers manager Janette Welton-Pai.
