Rod Macdonald named Engineering Ambassador of the Year

Issued: 16 April 2010

Rod Macdonald, chairman of Buro Happold, was named ACE Engineering Ambassador of the Year at ACE’s Annual Engineering Excellence Awards.  The ACE Engineering Ambassador Award is given to someone who has made a significant contribution to raising the profile of consultancy and engineering and goes beyond the ordinary.

The judges’ citation said: “They were impressed with the broad scope of this person’s experience and his remarkable role in one of the industry’s major business successes over the years.  He has worked around the world on major headline and groundbreaking projects. He is recognised as a leader in the consultancy and engineering field and you will all know his name.”

In a short thank you speech, Rod Macdonald told the audience of over 300 consulting engineers that there is a great opportunity ahead for the sector if they choose to seize it.  He gave as an example New Orleans and the warning that engineers gave to the authorities.  Those warnings were ignored and the engineers were proved correct.  Rod stressed the importance of consulting engineers making a forceful case to clients and stakeholders.

Nelson Ogunshakin, ACE chief executive, said: “I was delighted to present the award to Rod. He has been a fantastic ambassador for ACE, as its chair and supporter, and to the industry in so many ways.  Rod has been heavily involved in RedR, he was one of the team of eight who created an incredibly successful company, Buro Happold, and has always shown leadership on key issues.”

The awards were presented by the BBC’s Declan Curry and ACE chair Michelle McDowell gave a short opening speech.

There were eleven award categories covering small and large firms.
