Roads minister Mike Penning today (May 8th) announced that the government has given the green light for six major road projects.
Development will now start on the schemes, giving them a prime chance of these works being included in the next spending review period from 2015 onwards.
This preparatory work will focus on designing and consulting on proposals, as well as dealing with any necessary statutory processes.
The six schemes are a managed motorway project between junctions three and 12 of the M4, a congestion relief scheme at Junction 30 of the M25, junction improvement on the A19/A1058 coast road, widening of the A21 Tonbridge to Pembury road and improvements on the A63 in Hull and the A160/A180 at Immingham.
Speaking about these projects, Mr Penning said: "We are committed to tackling congestion, keeping traffic moving and supporting the UK economy, putting in money where it's most needed and where the public will get a good return on investment."
Earlier this year, the chancellor George Osborne announced a number of road schemes in his Budget, including on the A14 between Huntingdon and Cambridge.
