Activity in the UK construction sector increased in the first quarter of the year, new research has shown.
The Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) has published the results of its latest Construction Market Survey which shows that eight per cent more UK surveyors reported increases rather than decreases in workloads during the first three months of the year.
This represents a sharp contrast from the end of 2011 when more surveyors were experiencing a reduction in workloads.
Respondents were also positive about the future, with 21 per cent more respondents expecting workloads to rise over the next 12 months.
Simon Rubinsohn, RICS' chief economist, said: "The start of the year saw a cautious level of optimism develop across the UK construction industry.
"Workloads rose across the sector, albeit modestly and this looks as though it could continue over the next 12 months. Promisingly, this could also result in an increase in the numbers of jobs created in the sector."
By region, surveyors in London and the south-east reported the highest rises in overall activity.
