RenewableUK, the trade and professional body for the UK wind and marine renewables industries, has conducted a survey to prove that the industry has the public's support.
It was responding to the launch of the National Opposition to Windfarms (NOW) campaign, which wants to establish a national body to influence policy.
The results of the survey of over 1,000 people in the UK reveal that 67 per cent are in favour of the use of wind power in the UK, while only 8 per cent oppose.
Maria McCaffery, chief executive of RenewableUK, said it would be "undemocratic" to allow the NOW campaign to succeed.
"Wind is an abundant, clean, secure and affordable energy source," she said.
"It is therefore not only undemocratic to allow the vocal anti-wind minority to derail the UK's plans for renewable energy, but also damaging to our economy."
Earlier this year, a group of Tory MPs demanded that subsidies for wind energy producers be cut.
However, energy and climate change secretary Ed Davey said an energy mix was important for the future.
