RenewableUK, which represents the interest of the UK's wind energy industry, has hit back at a Campaign for the Protection of Rural England (CPRE) suggestion that the countryside is being "caught in a hurricane of new wind turbines".
Although CPRE recognises the need for green energy, it is unhappy with the current planning process for wind farms and wants the government to make reforms to the system.
However, RenewableUK is adamant that the planning regulations which are currently in place are more than adequate.
Dr Gordon Edge, RenewableUK's director of policy, claimed that people in rural areas in fact support wind energy more enthusiastically than those in towns and cities.
"The current planning system already rightly provides environmental safeguards which are among the most stringent in the world. As a result residents of the countryside welcome green energy," he said.
As well as CPRE, RenewableUK is also facing resistance from the National Opposition to Windfarms (NOW) campaign, which wants to establish a national body to influence policy.
