Reinvesting efficiency savings in potholes is welcome, but challenges remain

Issued: 23 February 2011

The Association for Consultancy and Engineering welcomed today’s announcement of an extra £100 million to repair potholes in England.  The funding represents a welcome additional investment in England’s vital transport networks.

As the government seeks to grow the economy and create jobs, continued focus on ensuring resilience of transport systems should be a priority.  The extra £100 million is derived from efficiency savings found by the Department for Transport.

Michael Hall, ACE’s head of policy and external affairs, said: “The principle of reinvesting efficiency savings in vital infrastructure is a good one, and should be a long-term aim.

“This additional funding for potholes will be welcomed by road users in England.  However, Scotland alone faces an estimated bill of £2 billion for repairing its road surfaces.  This underlines the scale of the challenge our networks face.”
