The number of homes built in the private sector has increased over the past 12 months, new figures have shown.
The National House Building Council (NHBC) has revealed that 20,168 registrations were made to build new homes in the private sector during the rolling quarter February to April 2012, a rise of five per cent compared with the same period last year.
However, new home registration figures for the public sector fell 49 per cent during the three-month period to 5,867. This resulted in a 15 per cent fall in overall new home builds in the UK.
Richard Tamayo, NHBC's commercial director, said: "It seems clear that the private sector is likely to continue to be the engine for much-needed growth in overall housing supply.
"Therefore monitoring the success of initiatives such as the New Buy scheme and changes to make the planning system more flexible will be key to understanding how the next few years will play out."
