The owners of the Lakeside shopping centre in Essex have submitted plans to extend the retail complex.
Capital Shopping Centres is hoping to add an additional 325,000 sq ft of retail space at the northern end of Lakeside, adding up to 40 new stores and increasing the size of the centre by nearly a third.
The £180 million project also includes improvement works to transport infrastructure, with a new bus station linked to Chafford Hundred rail station set to be created as well as provision for a link road to the north of the centre.
Local employment would receive a significant boost from the project as it is expected to create at least 1,000 construction jobs.
Jonathan Ainsley, director of asset management (south) at CSC said: "The planned extension enables us to accommodate bigger and better stores for many more retailers.
"We aim to continually evolve and invest in our centres to ensure we are offering the best experience for our shoppers as we can."
