Plans submitted for student accommodation in Vauxhall

Developer Downing has submitted plans to Lambeth Council to build new student accommodation in south London.

The north-west based firm is hoping to build a new 32-storey tower in Vauxhall which will include 572 student bedrooms, a gym and a 25m swimming pool.

Designed by architect Feilden Clegg Bradley, the tower will be Downing's first development in the capital.

Ian Harrison, development manager at Downing, said: "Our proposals would transform an under-used site with high quality student accommodation and contribute new community leisure facilities to the local area.

"London has one of the most robust student markets in the world and there is strong demand for high quality, purpose-built accommodation."

Mr Harrison added that the firm is actively seeking other sites in the capital for future projects.

Following a public consultation in the area, 76 per cent of residents expressed support for the scheme. The feedback also resulted in Downing extending the proposed length of the swimming pool to 25 metres to allow it to be used for competitive swim training.
